Croatia – A diversified country with interesting places like Labin

Euphrasian Basilica

Be impressed by the most beautiful, preserved monument of Early Byzantine art found in the Mediterranean. Built in the sixth century during the rule of Bishop Euphrasius, its uniqueness lies in the fact that it is the only church from that period with a preserved original structure. You will be stunned by its outstanding Byzantine mosaics, one of the most significant mosaic samples in Europe. The basilica has been enlisted on the UNESCO World Cultural and Heritage List since 1997.

Motovun

The legend states that Motovun was built by giants who lived in the valley of River Mirna. This town, which is also a monument, dates back to the 12th and 13th century, and is now nested on the peak of a hill. Head towards the very top of the Motovun hill and its Venetian Square by taking the longest Istrian stairway counting 1052 stairs.

Don't miss the opportunity to visit the medieval small town perched on a hilltop above Rabac. The birthplace of Matija Vlačić, Martin Luther's companion, is an obligatory stop for a vast number of tourists. Visit in the evening and experience the charming way it has combined cultural heritage with numerous coffee shops and art galleries packed with young people. Besides seeing the sights of the town, certainly visit the Labin coal mine which used to be of high significance to the Labin region.

Baška tablet

As a visitor to Krk, you really should see one of the most important and Croatian monuments, the Baška tablet (Bašćanska ploča). The tablet was discovered in 1851 in the church of St. Lucija in Jurandvor with King Zvonimir's charter chiselled in the Glagolitic script in 13 rows. The tablet was inserted into a church pavement dating back to 1100. The Baška tablet is a significant monument in historical terms since it is the first record which mentions the name of a ruler in the Croatian language.
